Role ·

Campus Experience Officer

Mentored engineering students one-on-one and in groups, and ran events on well-being and industry for the University of Toronto Engineering Society.

What the role was for

Campus Experience Officers were part of the Engineering Society. The job was to make life better for engineering students: mental health and well-being, but also workshops and activities that brought the community together, helped people learn, and connected them to industry.

How I got it

I went through an interview process. I was chosen for three things: how clearly I communicate, the empathy I showed, and how I handle difficult conversations with students who are having a hard time.

How people came together

We met students one-on-one to understand what the engineering student body needed and what it was struggling with. Then we created events to tackle exactly that. Part of it was bringing in industry experts to bridge study and industry, the same gap I later built the ACM chapter around.

We ran get-to-know-you events so students knew we existed and could come to us for advice. We mentored one-on-one and in groups. Each of us took on a huge number of mentees, and we kept accepting new ones. I couldn’t count how many people I talked to that year.
